What is Information Management?
Information management (IM) is about treating information as a resource that is as valuable to the University as time, money, infrastructure or technology. It is every staff member's responsibility to manage information so it can be used appropriately and optimally.
Information Management principles
The Division of Technology, Information and Learning Support (TILS) has adopted the following principles as the basis for information management activities and initiatives within the Division. All TILS staff create information as part of their work, so it's everyone's responsibility to manage the information they generate.
-
Compliance
Information needs to be managed in accordance with QUT policies and records management standards and external legislation.
-
Ownership
Information created in the course of University business is owned by QUT, however all staff are responsible for its effective management. As such, all staff members have responsibility for its appropriate creation, use, maintenance and disposal.
-
Corporate importance
TILS corporate information is a critical University resource and needs to be managed responsibly as a valuable asset.
-
Education and communication
To ensure all staff members are effective information managers, TILS will provide ongoing education, training, support and resources relating to information management practices and tools.
-
Personal responsibility
Each TILS staff member is responsible for effectively managing the information they create or use according to the Division's standards and principles and the University's policies and guidelines.
-
Access and discovery
Standards and conventions for the consistent description, structure and format of information should be used to facilitate efficient access and discovery of information.
-
Openness and sharing
TILS corporate information is available and accessible to all staff, except where the nature of the information would indicate otherwise. This openness facilitates the effective sharing and reuse of information across the Division.
-
ICT resources
To ensure technology facilitates effective information management, TILS will provide staff with user-centred and task-centred information tools, systems and support.
